HELPING OUR CENTRAL COAST KIDS ACHIEVE THEIR EDUCATIONAL GOALS
A forum aimed at helping to bridge the regional skills gap by increasing equity in education will be held on the Central Coast at the end of October.
As participation in higher education on the Central Coast is lower than the NSW and national averages, Focus on the Coast: Building Education Aspirations to Grow the Central Coast will allow the community to hear leaders in the field address how to better help our kids achieve their educational aspirations.
With evidence from the NSW-based Aspirations Longitudinal Study, a $1.2 million Australian Research Council-funded project, UON researcher and academic Professor Jenny Gore will give the keynote speech, which will provide insight into what Central Coast students think about higher education, as well as compare the region with other geographical areas.
“It’s important to identify how children in this region view higher education and to understand their career aspirations to better support them in achieving their goals.
“With this understanding, we can work together to ensure they have greater knowledge of the wide range of opportunities and pathways available to them and, in turn, achieve better equity in education,” she said.
Along with Shayne Player, Principal of Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College, Tumbi Umbi campus and John Mouland, CEO Regional Development Australia Central Coast, Professor Gore will provide educators and community leaders with insight into how they can help to build regional capacity by supporting aspirations for learning on the Central Coast.
John Mouland will outline how career and learning aspirations impact growth of the regional workforce and economy.
“RDA Central Coast is committed to supporting the economic development of our region, which thrives on the skills growth in our community. I am thrilled to be part of this great opportunity to enhance our community understanding,” he said.
The forum will be followed by a Q&A session.
The Focus on the Coast event will be jointly hosted by Regional Development Australia Central Coast and the University of Newcastle. This free event will be held at RDA Central
Coast Office from 2.30pm on Monday 31 October.
